A Young Man Gets Arrested for “Drunk Driving”, Talks to His Manager at Work About His Depression, and Gets Inspired to Turn His Life Around and Recoup His Self Respect

Derek was known at work as an extremely conservative individual who had an outstanding attendance record. He in no way attended any of the happy hours after work and it was known through the office that he was a deeply religious person who usually talked about the pitfalls of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency in our country.

Try to think of the shock in the company when one Monday morning Derek didn’t show up for work and not a soul had heard from him. In fact, it wasn’t until around 8:30 in the morning that the human resources department received a phone call about Derek from the downtown jail.

Derek Goes Out Drinking With a Number of His University House Mates

Evidently, Derek went out drinking with several of his college classmates and friends Saturday night and at some point close to 3:30 Sunday morning, Derek was arrested for “driving under the influence”. Considering that his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was exceptionally elevated, he had to spend two days inside the city jail.

Derek Talks to His Manager and The Human Resources Director

When Derek arrived at work on Tuesday morning, he instantly told his superior what had transpired and he asked if he could go and talk to the Human Resources manager about his DUI arrest.

When he got to the HR department and met with the manager, he articulated that he had not been inebriated since his college days and that he was rather humiliated about his “driving while intoxicated” arrest. He also stressed the point that he required some help selecting a highly trained and productive DWI attorney who would represent his “driving under the influence” case. In other words, Derek really wanted the Human Resources director to agree that he needed to see a DUI attorney.

The Human Resources director told Derek that he ought to make an appointment with someone inside the company employee’s assistance program to go over any probable drinking issue that he may have. The HR manager also articulated that he needs to go over his desire to employ a “driving under the influence” lawyer to represent him with respect to his “driving while intoxicated” case.

Furthermore, the Human Resources director told Derek that it was encouraging that he wanted to hire a DWI lawyer because of the difficulties and difficult consequences that happen to be related to a “drunk driving” conviction.

The Human Resources manager could tell that Derek was clearly displeased and embarrassed by this overall predicament. As a consequence, he informed Derek that while he doesn’t believe that responsible individuals really should ever get behind the wheel after drinking, sadly these situations at times come about to pretty good individuals.

The Human Resources director then explained that because such a state of affairs can’t be undone, what’s critical is what the person does from this moment forward. As reported by the Human Resources director, “does the man or women learn from his/her errors or does the person develop a pattern of alcohol related problems that cause the man or women long-term pain and suffering”?

Fortunately, Derek Did Not Have a History of Heavy and Excessive Drinking

Just before finishing their conversation, the Human Resources director explained to Derek that it was very positive that he doesn’t have a track record of excessive and abusive drinking drinking. Not only this but he hasn’t had an alcohol-related situation since his college days (which was roughly 20 years ago). As a result, Derek should be able to deal with his “driving under the influence” arrest with embarrassment but also with some assurance knowing that he will encounter and process this predicament and become an even better individual in the not too distant future.

Derek thanked the Human Resources manager for his practical and encouraging thoughts and then walked over to the company employee’s assistance program go over his “drunk driving” arrest, his participation in irresponsible and unhealthy drinking over the weekend, and his aspiration to employ a “driving while intoxicated” attorney to represent his DUI case.

After hearing Derek’s “story,” the healthcare practitioner that was part of the company employee’s assistance program went over Derek’s immediate “plan of action” that he needed to address and follow. First, he would be required to take a DUI class to learn more DUI facts and information. Second, he would also be required to take an alcohol abuse class to address his possible drinking problem. Third, he would be required to see a therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor about his depression.  And finally, it would be a particularily intelligent thing to do if he were to talk to a DUI lawyer about his DWI arrest.

Derek Feels a Sense of Relief Knowing That He Will Learn From His Mistake and Become More Dependable

It was obvious that Derek was quite distressed with the entire DUI predicament, but right after talking to the Human Resources manager and to the counselor inside the company employee’s assistance program, he felt comfort knowing that he would actually learn from his oversight and grow to be even more healthy and balanced, more accountable, and an even more thankful individual.
