Public school support for children with autism

The Federal law requires public school districts to initiate assistance programs to children with disabilities aged between three and 21. It also states that children with autism or autism spectrum disorder or ASD to be given additional services from public schools. All these services should be free of charge.

Under the Federal law, public schools are mandated to give educational programs to children with disabilities. Children aged starting three with ASD are included, or when the school has been notified that the child has any disability. The law also states that these public schools must take the Child Find referrals for children with potential disabilities and to attach children to required services from birth.

Ask evaluation for children with autism
If your child has autism and is studying at a public school, the school must initiate a meeting the parent and evaluate any issues concerning any disability, including developmental or physical disabilities. Once the school suspects disability, it should immediatley conduct a free assessment to the child that covers the areas where disability is suspected. The assessment must include topics that covers speech/language, social and emotional development, academic or pre-academic skills, physical abilities (fine and gross motor, hearing, vision, etc), intellectual abilities, and adaptive behavior.
After the evaluation, the parent must be given a copy of the result. The result of the evaluation is confidential. However, the school is not required to conduct any test or evaluation on areas where there is no suspected disability based on all of the available information.
According to the Individual’s with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA, the school has the obligation to conduct evaluation in areas where disability is suspected. And the Charlotte autism service said that if you believe that your child has any disability or is late in developing in some areas, then you can coordinate with your local public school to set a meeting and discuss the possibility of conducting a thorough evaluation.
